Govt Instructs Passco to Accelerate Wheat Sales to Stabilize Market Ahead of New Harvest

The federal government has directed the Pakistan Agricultural Storage and Services Corporation (Passco) to expedite its wheat sales ahead of the new harvest. This move aims to stabilize the market and prevent any financial losses that could arise from holding onto stock for too long. With a focus on timely disposal, the government is ensuring that the country’s food security remains intact.

Minister for National Food Security, Rana Tanveer Hussain, chaired a high-level meeting at Passco’s headquarters in Lahore. He emphasized the urgency of selling off wheat stocks before the new crop arrives. He also pointed out that delayed sales could lead to significant storage-related losses and impact wheat quality, which in turn could destabilize the market.

As of March 6, Passco reported holding 2.47 million tonnes of wheat after selling nearly 579,000 tonnes from April 2024 to March 2025. In addition, they procured 1.79 million tonnes during the 2024 wheat season. Despite these efforts, the Minister stressed the importance of continuing to accelerate sales to prevent potential market disruptions.

Passco officials assured the Minister that they are coordinating closely with provincial authorities to speed up wheat transactions. They also highlighted their commitment to transparency and maintaining stability in the market. The government’s focus remains on ensuring fair returns for farmers while securing the country’s agricultural needs.
